You know one of the best things about anime is its sheer willingness to just throw weird scenarios at you and just run with it. I mean have you fuckers gone onto MyAnimeList and just randomly read some of the summaries? You would think a lot of these fucken freakazoid ass scenarios would be straight up screwing with you. Or were to weird to be true. I mean if I hadn’t have actually watched it beforehand I would think the summery of “Is This a Zombie” was fucken with me. I mean listen to this shit.
Ayumu has had bad luck in his life — and after. Murdered by a serial killer, the high school student was later resurrected as a zombie by cute necromancer Eucliwood, who subsequently moved in with him. His corpse was later chopped in half by a magical girl with a pink chainsaw. Because her powers are trumped by Eucliwood’s, Ayumu doesn’t die again; however, he is transformed into the world’s first magical girl zombie. As if that’s not bad enough, there’s also a hideous demon on the prowl who wants to devour Ayumu.
Just that alone would have confused the shit out of me. I mean the next thing you know they’re going to come up with an anime about a fucken dragon who becomes some lonely office women’s maid.
Fellow human filth…This is my review of Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon. Or in English…Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.
This is one of those anime’s that are just delightful in a sense that the premise is just so fucken bizarre and out there yet at the same time is highly adorable and funny. This is one of those anime’s where I can’t point out why exactly I like it. Usually I hate anime’s like this and want nothing more than to just drop it. But in the end the premise just intrigued the hell out of me. First and foremost this is a comedy anime based on a comedy manga that I couldn’t find much of so weather it follows the manga to a satisfying degree I don’t know. But basically, what we have here is a young woman who works as a programmer and one day leaves her abode to find a giant dragon outside her house that morphs into the form of a human named Tohru proclaiming her services as her maid. There’s some back story as to why she wants to be her maid and it’s kind of funny but I’m not going to spoil it. Let’s just say Miss Kobayashi was drunk and in the wrong place at the wrong time. The point is though that it’s a very arbitrary scenario that really only anime can come up with. And I fucken hate the fact that I like it.
Though apprehensive at first Kobayashi allows her to work as her maid free of charge. Why? Because she was late for work and needed transportation.
And the reason Tohru even wants to be Kobayashi’s maid is due to the fact that she saved her from death and thus fell in love with her. Yep. It’s one of those lesbian characters who falls in love with our lead. Unfortunately Kobayashi isn’t a lesbian and doesn’t feel the same way. Still though she accepts her offer and reluctantly makes Tohru her maid.
And of course there are other dragons that join the cast including Kanna who in dragon years is basically a fucken preschooler. You can tell just by looking at her and oh my god the pedo lolicon comments I’ve read over the internet regarding this little bitch. I myself haven’t looked up any eromanga staring this little dragon tike but something tells me once I do I’m either going love it or hate it. And then there’s the relationship she has with Riko Saikawa, one of her school mates after she decides to attend a human preschool. Yeah, she actually ends up attending a fully human preschool, because you know…why the fuck not. In fact, hell, this anime in general has a lot of “why the fuck not” factors. I’m going to let a mystical creature into my life because why the fuck not? I’m going to let a little dragon girl live with me because why the fuck not! I’m going to up and move into a new apartment to make room for these two dragons because why the fuck not! This is one of those anime’s where you have to say “You know what fuck this shit! Its adorable! Who cares why?” And this anime is indeed adorable. Sometimes too much so in fact.
Getting back to Kanna and Riko Saikawa. She comes to fall in love with her which is pretty unorthodox as again there practically preschoolers. And a preschooler developing romantic feelings for another girl is, you know. Weird. But in a way fucken awesome. Unfortunately given the fact that these characters are basically 8 years old people are freaking out and once again are calling this shit “child porn”. In one scene Kanna lovingly jumps on to Riko while the two are alone in her room and also play a rather eventful game of twister. And these scenes pose some rather provocative imagery. I’m not gonna lie. And because of these factors there are once again idiots across the internet labeling japan and its anime industry the kiddy porn capital of the freaken world. To these people I say…shut the fuck up!
Japanese are just as agienst pedophilia in the real world as any westerner and know very well that it has traumatizing effects on children and is in fact punishable by japanese law. They just have a different take on what is and isn’t acceptable when it comes to there sense of humor and what is fiction and understand that fiction in no way has any ramification in the real world. Unlike so many of us westerners who think that shit like violent video games causes mass shootings. That and they have a unique viewpoints on relationships. Hell keep in mind that japan is a country where parents allow there preschool aged children to walk to school alone due to japan having one of the worlds lowest crime rates. Things are different on the other side of the ocean.
And the fact that Riko seems confused after the aforementioned ordeal well probably make people all the more turned off. But at the end of the day that’s part of love: Confusion. Especially on shy inexperienced people. People who don’t know how to come to grips with feelings of love are often left a bit emotionally and mentally drained after a day with there crush. But the annoying thing about Riko as a character is that she has a tendency to flip out and enter states of hornyness whenever Kanna makes physical contact with her. And this became a reoccurring gag that’s done over and over and over again. Almost every scene that involves the two of them has the same thing happening.
And you can probably understand how this got very annoying for me very fast. I mean if she’s old enough to fall in love why not start fucken dating for fuck sakes. But the bottom line is you have to be okay with the notion of children getting involved in romantic or comically intimate relationships. That and the moe.
This is another one of those anime’s where you have to be 110% okay with moe. If not you will be annoyed by this. The winter 2017 season was one that was filled with moe blobby mainstream anime’s now that I think about it. This is just one of them. The main theme that I found this anime is trying to convey is family. Kobayashi is the kind of women who’s never really understood or never had an involved family of sorts. And then suddenly one just comes out of nowhere and as a result shes suddenly put into a somewhat family like setting. And this can lead to what I guess could be considered some rather heartwarming moments as we see Kobiyashi go from a loner office worker to suddenly having a family of her own. As a result of this we see some real growth in her. In one episode Kanna wishes Kobayashi to attended her sports festival but she refuses due to having to work. But the guilt she feels afterwords compels her to work over time in order for her to go. And this is just one example of how she comes to love her new dragon family. If I wasn’t such a cold person I would admit there were times when I was watching this and thought “huh. That’s kind of sweet. Reminds me of when my dad was alive and my brother was in jail.” But then Riko touched Kanna again and moaned and I immediately grew annoyed again.
The other Dragon/Human combo that’s here is Lucoa. And I’m calling her that because her actual name is too hard to freaken say. But Lucoa and another character Shouta have another weird relationship that resembles Kanna and Rikos. Lucoa doesn’t so much as have a “thing” for the boy – who is clearly younger then her. They have some reoccurring gags of their own involving the same kind of…well I don’t want to call it “intimacy”, But basically Locoa ends up living with Shouta due to a “misunderstood demon summoning” due to him belonging to a family of mages.
And let me tell you. Feminists well fucken hate this bitch. Not only because of the weird relationship she shares with the otherwise underage boy shes living with. But because literally every time this dumb bimbo is on screen her ginormous – what fucken look like double G cups or some shit – jiggle with a nice little boing sound effect.
It’s yet another annoying reoccurring gag that’s supposed to be funny. But isn’t. Normally I would be fine with this shit. Boobs in anime have always been a comedic staple in anime. But the fact of the matter is her boobs are so ridiculously huge that it turned me off. Actually, now that I think about it all of the main cast here has huge baby bags accept for Kobiyashi which bums her out. Elma another dragon who ends up becoming part of the cast in the latter half of the series has a rack on her as well. So, what I like to call the “titty trope” is very prevalent here. But that’s a thing in shounen manga. It’s all meant for comedy to make little teenage japanese boys giggle or cop there first stiffy. I don’t know. Point is all this is supposed to be funny! So, fuck off!
Anyways, getting back to Shouta’s character. He irritated me due to the fact that he’s a kid living every boy’s dream. Having a fucken women’s tits smothered all over him yet absolute doesn’t care for it. In fact he’s scared of her. And NOT because hes a kid with an older women making moves on him. But because he’s convinced that she’s some kind of demon out for his soul or some shit. I’m sorry but a male character – regardless of age – who literally runs away from tits is either secretly gay or is fucken retarded. At that age I was already dreaming about sucking on my own sister in laws tits. So when there’s a character in anime who runs away from a women who is literally offering herself I’m in general really annoyed. A straight teenage boy running away from a pair of tities is a completely asinine notion. He should be all up in them. Not running for his life.
And lastly there’s Fafner. Who really is a kind of a joke and becomes a background character who ends up turned into an otaku after playing some nice human games with another otaku. There is literally nothing else to say about him after that. So yeah if you haven’t notice this by now the entire anime is just chalked full of running gags. Another one is Tohru constantly trying to feed Kobiyahi peace’s of her tale as a show of affection.
Why it doesn’t hurt her when she cuts off bits of her tale and why she even dose it in the first place I don’t know. I guess its an expression of love in the Dragon realm But I think it’s the fact that it doesn’t make any fucken sense that’s funny. Kobiyahi herself finds it weird too. And it’s all this constant reminder that we’re dealing with a human placed in a weird humorous situation. And I also want to point out that it’s not all gags here. While most of it is gags there are also a lot of interesting lore we learn about Tohru’s world.
That and the heart warming moments that pop up where Tohru realizes that due to humans and there limited life span she well have to one day say goodbye to her love interest. And that notion is this animes long running sad factor constantly at work in the background. And the anime likes to keep reminding you of it. And its this notion that makes you want to keep watching. I can just imaging some one drawing a fan doujinshi where Kobayashi dies of old age leaving Tohru trying to move on from the loss. And it’s all these characters and story notions that come to make up just this entertaining weird ass comical story of the day to day lives of these people with some heartwarming pretexts. What the story comes right down to is Tohru’s love for Kobayashi and Kobayashi adapting to all of this new craziness.
If I was to critique anything harshly it would be the ending. Like I said I couldn’t find the manga so I’m unsure of how much it followed. But I found that the ending left on a bit of a cliffhanger. Granted the final confrontation in the last episode was pretty intriguing. But the way it ended was really disappointing. It felt like it was leading up to something new with some new characters on the verge of being introduced. But it ended without me getting to see them. And these types of endings really get on my nerves. It’s obvious without even reading the manga that this ends prematurely and I fucken hate it for that.
Animation wise when I found out that this was by Kyoto Animation I was really rather surprised. I mean if you’re an avid watcher of all of the big-time Kyoto Anime then just what about this screams Kyoto Ani? The only other anime that came close to this kind of style would be Nichijou. Which makes sense seeing as how both this and Nichijou were directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto. The character designs are also benefiting of this type of setting. Kobiyashi and her geeky appearance and Torus maid outfit and tail. And that’s another thing! Her tail! There a few times watching this that I couldn’t stop staring at her fucken tail. I mean look at this screen cap and tell me that shit doesn’t look like its coming straight out of her fucken pussy:
But aside from that though the animation they put into some of the gags were honestly really funny. I don’t know why but Kobayashi’s reactions whenever shit goes arie always made me laugh. You would have to be suffering from a serious fucken hangover or some shit to have this sort of reaction when a fucken dragon comes flying into your apartment.
Really though all things considered this is truly the best moe themed anime of the entire season and I honestly enjoyed it. A few things hold it back sure but really it wasn’t anything necessary bad. And with it comes a nice well deserved…7.6 out of 10 and sure as hell gets the Moe Blob, Comedy and Pedo Bear seals of Approval.
I recommend it to anyone who wants a strange yet colorful, cute and sometimes very intriguing and heartwarming story about dragon humans. If you can get passed the weird relationships between two children….one child and an adult….and a lesbian dragon and a human…then you’ll be able to stomach this. Hopefully Kyoto well see the obvious potential here and push for a second season with a more satisfying ending. If that were to happen then this anime would probably be bounced up to an 8. But as of now its going to stay at a 7.6. But this is just one of those anime’s that screams. “I doubt it.”
And with that fucken done.
